Congratulations to three of our Y11 students who took part in the Dicover US Programme at the University of Sheffield.
Several of our STWA students were invited to attend the University of Sheffield from Y9 - Y11. They were supported in discovering the University of Sheffield for themselves and found out what it was really like to be a university student.
They were able to sample different subjects and find out about the courses that all five of the University Faculties have to offer - Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities, Science, Engineering, Medicine and Dentistry & Health.
They attended the University three times in each of Years 9, 10 and 11 and took part in mini lectures, subject tasters and explored different courses and careers. They were guided on their subject choices at GCSE and how Post-16 can open doors to a wide range of different professions and opportunities.
All activities encouraged them to develop their confidence, problem solving skills and their ability to work with others. In other words, the skills necessary to be successful at university, and in life.
The 3 students who completed this were Belle Phillips, Thalia Atack and Charlotte Broadhurst. They have all won star student at different times throughout, so they should all be proud. This has been a great opportunity for those with great academic talent to access university, when without this, they may not have. All 3 students have bright futures ahead of them and have not only made themselves proud, but Sir Thomas Wharton Academy proud as well.
We are delighted that Belle Phillips received the 'Star Student Class of 2019' award for exceptional performance on the programme. The University of Sheffield said:
"It has been a real pleasure having Belle on the programme. Belle has really grown in confidence over her time on Discover US and she always has a big smile and is so positive and enthusiastic in everything she has done. She has been awarded star student more times than any other pupil on the programme which is an amazing achievement! Belle has been awarded: Money Master, Total Teamplayer, Radical Researcher, Next Level Note taker. Congratulations Belle!"
